Nursing research is the term used to describe the evidence used to support nursing practice. Nursing, as an evidence based area of practice, has been developing since the time of Florence Nightingale to the present day, where many nurses now work as researchers based in universities as well as in the health care setting. Nurse education places emphasis upon the use of evidence from research in order to rationalise nursing interventions. In England and Wales courts may determine whether or not a nurse acted reasonably based upon whether or not their intervention was supported by research.
Nursing Research Council: The Research Council strives to create a practice environment that promotes clinical scholarship where nurses view nursing research as valued, accessible and important to nursing practice. Research Council activities offer opportunities for novice to expert nurses to expand their knowledge of and participation in research. The ultimate purpose is to promote quality patient care through excellence in clinical practice and to promote the professional image of nursing.
Gundersen Lutheran Medical Foundation sponsors a fellowship program in nursing research and evidence-based practice for registered nurses. The overall theme is "Nurses: Making a Difference Through the Fellowship." The purpose is to encourage and assist nurses in the development, implementation and dissemination of nursing education programs, nursing research, and evidence-based practice, responsive to issues of importance throughout Gundersen Lutheran Health System.
